Saving your work

Saving to your network drive

This is your personal area on the system and only you can use it - you'll know it's yours because it will have your student ID number as its name.  There are several megabytes of storage space just for you here - you can save to and delete files as you wish and you can use it from any College computer.

Log off when you finish to stop anyone else using your files.

Your network drive is emptied at the end of each College year, so keep a copy of your files on a floppy or a USB memory stick.

Saving to a Floppy disk

Put your name and course details on the disk label so we can return it to you if you leave it behind or lose it.

Keep floppy disks in a disk box or case, and replace them often before they wear out.

Never rely on just one working disk - make a 2nd and a 3rd copy so that you have a couple of “backups” in case your original is damaged.

Saving to a USB memory stick

Put your name and course details on your memory stick so we can return it to you if you leave it behind or lose it.

Please make sure you use ones that are Windows 2000/XP compliant, the college cannot install drivers for individual USB devices.

Backups

Make backups whenever you make big changes to a document.

Make backups to a different storage place (eg put your originals on a USB memory stick and make a backup to another stick or to your network store) and don't keep the backups in the same place as the original - if you lose one, you lose them all!

Make changes to your original document and then back it up.  Do not make changes direct to your  backup  - you'll forget which is the latest version of your document.
