Only students and staff of Tamworth & Lichfield College may use the IT facilities available at the College. All students must be in possession of a current, valid ID card before using any of the facilities. These are obtainable from the Information Centre.
The College monitors network and email accounts remotely for misuse, as listed below, and has installed screening software that prevents access to games and to offensive, racist, obscene or indecent images/text on the Internet. If you need to download such material for legitimate research purposes, you must apply in writing in advance to the Systems Manager and your application must be counter-signed by your lecturer/line manager. Completing this procedure is not a guarantee that permission will be granted.
The College is committed to the prevention of publication of any material which it may consider pornographic, excessively violent or which comes within the provisions of the Obscene Publications Act 1959 or the Protection of Children Act 1978 on any of the College’s IT facilities. The College will regard any such publication as a very serious matter and will not hesitate to contact the police.
The College believes that the following activities are serious offences and constitute misuse of its networks and computers. Where misuse is suspected, your account may be disabled and you may be at risk of disciplinary action being taken. You are deemed responsible for any misuse of your account.
- make unauthorised or inappropriate use of the Internet/intranet in classes, workshops or offices
- use the College networks and/or its Internet connection for any purpose which circumvents the College’s IT security policies
- use the College network and/or the Internet for the viewing, creation, downloading, copying or transmission of offensive, racist, obscene or indecent images/text. This type of material also refers to that which may inconvenience or cause undue distress to others.
- use the College’s IT facilities to place or disseminate materials which discriminate or encourage discrimination on grounds of sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability, race or ethnic origin.
- place links to Bulletin Boards which are likely to publish defamatory materials
- place links to sites which display pornographic material
- place links to Bulletin Boards which are likely to contain discriminatory statements
- load any files onto the College network which have file extensions .exe .com .vbe or .vbs
- install, download or store games or media (eg MP3) files onto the College network
- hack, or attempt to hack, into any College system
- use the College’s computers to attempt to hack into another system
- place links to sites which facilitate hacking and similar activities
- deliberately introduce a virus or other malicious software to College computers or systems
- destroy programs or data without authorisation
- add unauthorised passwords to data files
- connect any hardware (eg laptops, PDAs) to college networks without permission from IT Services
- make unauthorised or inappropriate use of email in classes, workshops or offices
- use email to send abusive, racist or offensive messages and hate mail, or harass any person via email
- send or forward chain letters via the College email service
- use “chat” lines or software on College computers or subscribe to inappropriate newsgroups
- use instant messaging services or software on College computers
- copy software - all software on College computers is held under licence and must not be copied
- download text, images or sounds from Internet sites and use them without first asking for and obtaining permission from the person who has created the material.
- place links to sites where copyright-protected material is unlawfully distributed
- copy the work of others and pass it off as your own, with or without their permission – this is plagiarism and is strictly prohibited
